FEATURED PROJECT: Smaller Learning Communities

This paper reports on the preliminary phases of a research project that investigates the intentional formation of small learning communities in an existing high school. Small schools research indicates the efficacy of breaking down large high schools into smaller units in improving various academic and social outcomes. What is not clear is the role of the physical environment of the school in setting favorable conditions for the formation of small learning communities. This research project asks three questions: What features, components or organization of the physical environment are critical to the formation of small learning communities? How does the physical environment of the school contribute to the sense of sociality in schools? And what role does youth participation play in the process of forming small learning communities?
