The Center for Health, Environment, and Justice (CHEJ) is a national environmental organization founded and led by grassroots leaders. Started by activists from Love Canal, the organization provides technical assistance, information, and training to community groups interested in organizing to address environmental threats in their communities. CHEJ supports several campaigns related to making communities more environmentally safe for infants and children. The Children's Environmental Health Network is a national, multidisciplinary organization, whose mission is to protect the fetus and child from environmental health hazards and promote a healthy environment. Its goals are: to promote the development of sound public health and child-focused national policy; to stimulate prevention-oriented research; to educate health professionals, policymakers and community members in preventive strategies; and to elevate public awareness of environmental hazards to children. The institute covers a variety of topics related to educational facilities such as environmental comfort (thermal, visual, acoustic), open school, the relationship with community, evaluation of school design, modeling school needs for renovation, educational facility design criteria, schools for 21st century. In addition, they have investigated the current situation of educational facilities in other countries (Japan, China, USA, German, France, UK). Refering to USA, they have benchmarked and published reports on three American schools, Quincy community school in Georgia, a Magnet school in Miami, and a elementary school. New Designs for Learning is a comprehensive approach to educational reform and revitalization. Application of the design process and resulting recommendations have been made to a wide range of settings including K-12 schools, community and technical colleges, universities, and community-based training agencies. Key design themes include using active learning strategies; integrating subject matter areas; linking learning in school, college, and community-based settings; and leveraging partnerships among educational levels and with businesses and community organizations. School Works is a UK organisation which links the design of secondary school buildings to the educational agenda.
